One of the most valuable assets that someone will ever own is their vehicle. When you are a car owner, you’ll want to make sure that you’re maintaining properly and keeping it in good condition. One part of this is ensuring that all of your vehicle fluids are full and clean at all times. There are various auto fluids that need changed on occasion.

          Engine Oil

The most common vehicle fluid that you will change from time to time is your engine oil. Engine oil is essential as it helps to protect your engine and ensure it runs efficiently. Depending on your type of vehicle and the form of oil used, you will need to have it changed after every 3,000 to 5,000 miles driven. Doing this will ultimately protect your engine and keep it running well.

          Windshield Wiper Fluid

The windshield wipers of your vehicle are important and necessary as they can help ensure you are able to clean dirt and debris off of your windshield. For them to work properly, you will need to have windshield wiper fluid. Generally, this will need to be replenished a few times per year. However, this varies based on how much you drive and your typical driving conditions.

          Brake Fluid

The brakes of your car ensure you are able to stop when necessary. As there are a lot of different parts and components in your brakes that are needed to work well, it can cause friction when using the brakes. The use of brake fluid can help provide some lubrication and ultimately will protect your brakes. You should check this fluid with each vehicle service and may need to have it replaced entirely every few years.

          Transmission Fluid

The transmission of your car is necessary to ensure you can shift gears when changing speeds. Your transmission has various components that can also cause friction when in use. To ensure that your transmission is protected, you will want a full and clean supply of transmission fluid. A transmission fluid exchange service generally is needed every few years but could be required more frequently in some cases.

It continues to be very important that you properly maintain and care for your vehicle. One part of this is ensuring that you replace your vehicle fluids on time. There are various fluids to change in the vehicle on occasion, which can help ensure your car continues to be efficient and safe to drive.

The Top 5 Reasons Why Your Check Engine Light Turned On

Every car owner has been there. You are enjoying your drive, and suddenly the “check engine” light turns on. In such moments, your first worry is to panic. Why is my check engine light turned on? Will my car suddenly stop running in the middle of the road? If you are in an isolated place, you also get concerned about your safety or where you can get help. The good thing is that there is no need to panic. Although this is something you should not ignore, it does not mean your engine is about to explode. Here are five reasons why your check engine light turned on.

          Faulty Catalytic Converter

A catalytic converter is responsible for converting carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. This ensures harmful gases are not emitted, hence protecting the environment. Most catalytic converters can serve you well the entire lifetime of the car. A spoiled catalytic converter reduces fuel economy. It is good to have the catalytic converter inspected and fixed if you notice reduced fuel efficiency, decreased performance, and a strange smell.

Your Oxygen Sensor Needs To Be Replaced

Another reason for the check light engine turning on is the oxygen sensor. It is located in the car’s emission control system. Its purpose is to ensure your engine runs at peak performance and burns the right amount of fuel. This reduces its ability to check the oxygen mix and fuel system in the engine, hence malfunctioning. To have this fixed, go to the auto repair shop.

          Replacement for Mass Airflow Sensor

To determine the amount of fuel needed for the engine to run, the amount of air entering the engine needs to be measured. That is the responsibility of the mass airflow sensor (MAS). It is susceptible to dirt and oil buildup. If you do not service your car regularly, your MAS will start malfunctioning and provide incorrect information. This will contribute to failure in other parts of the engine, leading to reduced engine performance.

          Faulty or Loose Gas Cap

Can a loose gas cap really cause issues? Is it one of the reasons my check engine light is on? It may seem like a small thing, but it can also contribute to the check engine light turning on. A loose or faulty gas cap can throw off your car’s emission system due to fuel vapors leaking out. This leads to reduced vehicle efficiency. Fortunately, fixing is easy. Check the gas cap. If it is loose, tighten it, and if it is damaged, visit a mechanic and have it fixed.

          Faulty Spark Plugs

A spark plug can last anything between 45,000-125,000 miles, depending on the year the car was manufactured. But when it is faulty, it will cause spark plug wires to start misfiring, and this will cause the warning light to turn on.

How Often You Should Take Your Car to the Auto Shop

If you’re a new car owner, you’re probably asking, “How often should I take my car to the shop?” While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, these guidelines can help you:

How Often Do I Take My Car To Get Maintenance Repair?

Manufacturers provide guidelines in their manuals for all vehicle owners on when to get the most crucial maintenance work done. Those guidelines are designed to help vehicle owners preserve their car’s life for as long as possible. Failure to follow the maintenance protocol can cause your vehicle’s performance to suffer greatly if you miss the appointments.

For example, oil changes are vital to the engine. Most manufacturers recommend that vehicle owners change their oil every 3,000 to 12,000 miles. The manufacturers also express these increments in terms of months or years. Getting regular oil changes will prevent friction and caking issues, and it will ensure that your motor receives its essential lubrication.

You’ll also need to have your car’s filters changed. Tune-ups and spark plug changes also have guidelines for maintenance. Furthermore, you’ll have to keep an eye on your tires. Your tires will need to be rotated, balanced, and aligned at certain times to prevent uneven wearing.

Generally, vehicle owners should rotate their tires every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Wheel alignments have more extended requirements, so you may only have to do that once every two or three years. However, you should take your car to a mechanic if you notice that your vehicle pulls to the right or left while driving.

Know When To Take Your Car for a Checkup

It’s wise to take your car in for a checkup to ensure everything is running smoothly. You may choose to have someone look at it every few months, or you can take it once a year. Think of your car as an extension of yourself. You visit the doctor at least once a year for a checkup. Why not give your vehicle the same care? The mechanic may spot a minor problem that he or she can fix immediately. That observation may save you thousands of dollars.

          Respond to Issues Immediately

Most vehicle owners make the mistake of waiting to take their cars to the repair shop because of time restraints and financial problems. However, it’s always best to let someone look at your vehicle when you notice something wrong. Some shops offer discounts and promotions to their newest members. Other shops provide credit services from third-party providers. You can even go to a friend or family member to see if you can get assistance with your vehicle. Getting help right away is paramount if you want to maintain your vehicle’s health appropriately.

Now you know more about how frequently you should take your vehicle to an auto repair shop. The truth is that you should see your local repair shop regularly. Don’t be shy with your car. Allow experts to care for your vehicle so that you can get the most out of it daily.

          Old age

The first thing to consider is your tires’ age. Many manufacturers offer tread wear guarantees of at least 60,000 miles, but that doesn’t mean you should wait to hit that mark. We recommend replacing your tires every six years or so because the rubber starts to naturally break down throughout the years, increasing the chance of a blowout.

          Shallow tire tread

Perhaps the easiest way to tell when to get new tires is to perform the penny test. In this test, take a penny, and stick it into the tire tread with Lincoln’s head pointed down into the tread. If any of the top of Honest Abe’s head is visible, you need new tires because your tread is overly worn.

Be sure to perform this test on all four of your tires and to check a few different spots on each tire. Some tires can wear down faster than others, and each tire can wear down unevenly.

          Uneven tread wear

Speaking of uneven tread wear, that’s another one of the signs you need new tires. Here’s a quick breakdown of common types of uneven wear to lookout for:

           Center wear:

You could be overinflating your tires if the center of your tires tends to wear down faster than the edges. In addition to wearing your tires down two times faster, overinflation leads to a bumpy ride and poor control in wet conditions. Always follow your manufacturer’s recommendation for inflation.

           Edge wear:

The flip side of center wear is edge wear—when the edges wear down faster than the center of the tire. As you may be able to guess, edge wear is the result of underinflated tires. Keep in mind that older tires are more prone to losing tire pressure, so it’s a good idea to check them all at least once a month.

           Inner or outer wear:

If your tire’s inner or outer edge is more worn than the center or other side, this is a more serious issue than inflation. In fact, you could have an alignment problem on your hand. Your mechanic should already know to adjust the alignment if he/she sees the tread wear, but be sure to ask about having your vehicle’s alignment adjusted. Driving with improper alignment for too long ruins your tires and can even lead to suspension issues.

Common Car Noises and What They Mean

There are tons of signs that something’s wrong with your vehicle, but some of the leading indicators are weird car noises. Generally speaking, you should bring your car to a mechanic as soon as you hear anything strange coming from your car.

Keep reading to learn a few common car noises to be aware of.

          Tires

You won’t get too far without a good set of tires on your car. Watch out for any of these common car noises that are signs of bad tires:

           Squealing:

It’s actually pretty common for tires to squeal, especially when making a sharp turn. The most likely cause of this sound is an underinflated tire. If you constantly hear a squealing sound, stop by a gas station and inflate those tires.

           Humming:

You’ll always hear some road noise while you’re driving along, but if there’s a constant hum that seems to get louder as the speed increases, something’s wrong. That humming sound typically results from uneven tread wear, so it’s time to get new tires right away.

          Brakes

Your brakes are essential for your safety and the well-being of other drivers on the road. Bring your vehicle to a pro as soon as you hear any of these weird car noises:

           Squeaking:

Brake pad manufacturers install wear indicators in each pad to alert drivers when it’s time for new pads. These wear indicators are tiny pieces of metal that squeak when they make contact with the rotor disk. It simply means it’s time for new brake pads if you hear this sound.

           Grinding:

Hearing a grinding sound when applying the brake could be a costly problem if it’s not addressed soon. This sound means your brake pads are completely worn through and you’re soon going to damage the rotor disks. See a brake specialist right away about getting new brakes.

          Steering

The steering system is also essential in safely getting from point A to B. Here are a few sounds that mean you could be in trouble:

           Whining:

A whining or squealing noise when you turn the steering wheel often indicates that your vehicle is low on power steering fluid. Topping off your power steering fluid can be enough to fix this issue, but it doesn’t hurt to bring your car to a mechanic to look for leaks.

           Popping:

A popping or clicking sound when you turn the wheel indicates an issue further down in your suspension or wheels. Popping often indicates worn suspension joints, while clicking points towards bad constant velocity (CV) joints. Your best bet is to see a mechanic to diagnose the issue.

Why Your Car Won’t Start on a Cold Morning

There’s nothing more annoying than dealing with a car that won’t start on a winter morning. When temperatures drop, there are several things that can impact the performance of your vehicle, making it difficult to start the engine.

If your car is not starting in cold temperatures, here are some of the common causes and solutions.

Why is my car not starting in cold weather?

Cold temperatures take a toll on many of your vehicle’s essential components, making it harder for your car to get started. Some of the common causes of the problem include:

           Cold batteries:

When temperatures get cold, battery performance suffers. Batteries rely on chemical reactions to provide a charge, and they slow down in cold weather. It makes it harder for the battery to do its job, negatively impacting starting power.

           Thickened fluids:

Cold temperatures thicken essential fluids including oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze and more. When fluids thicken, it’s harder for them to flow freely through the engine. This reduction in performance places extra strain on the battery, making it harder for you to start your car.

           Moisture in fuel lines:

If your car has worn fuel lines, cold temperatures can freeze moisture that’s seeped in over time. A fuel blockage results in an engine that won’t start. If your battery is in good shape but your car still won’t start, it could be a problem with your fuel lines.

How to start a car in cold weather

If you’re having issues starting your car on a cold day, don’t panic. Try some of these simple methods to get your engine fired up in no time:

           Cycle the key:

Before you put the key in the ignition, make sure all electronic components like the headlights, heater and radio are switched off so they won’t pull energy from the battery. Next cycle the key by putting it in the ignition and turning it from off to start 10 This effectively warms up the battery and starter and can usually get your car running.

           Jump-start the battery:

If cycling the key doesn’t work to get your battery going, find a family member, friend or neighbor who can jump-start your car. Once the car is running, visit your local auto service shop for a battery test, since you’re likely dealing with a weakened battery that will die again.

           Call for assistance:

If your engine still isn’t turning over after you’ve tried the methods listed above, call roadside assistance to get your car to your nearest auto service shop where a technician can quickly diagnose and treat the problem. Usually, all it takes is investing in a new battery to get the problem taken care of and keep your car running reliably all winter long.

5 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Car Battery

A battery is one of the most important components in every vehicle, and it plays a crucial role in both starting and powering a vehicle. Unfortunately, batteries don’t last forever, requiring periodic replacement.

How can you tell if you should consider replacing your car battery? Look for these five signs that you should have your

You have difficulty starting the vehicle

Batteries provide the starting power for vehicles. If you’re noticing difficulty starting the ignition or turning over the engine, you likely need to get your car battery replaced. If you’re noticing a slow or weak start, the components in your battery are likely wearing out, and it will take a few more seconds than usual for the engine to turn over. Rather than waiting for your battery to die completely, invest in a replacement battery—otherwise you could risk getting stranded with an engine that won’t start.

Has the check engine light on your dashboard suddenly illuminated? Don’t ignore it, as this often indicates a problem with either the battery or one of the car’s computers. The cause of the problem is usually a weakened battery or an alternator that isn’t returning a charge to it. Consult with a mechanic to determine whether the battery is failing or if the check engine light is engaged for another reason.

If your vehicle’s electrical components, like power windows, door locks or electric seats, aren’t as responsive as usual, the cause could be a weakened battery. A failing battery can’t power all the electric components of a car as well as it should. Give your electronic components a quick test; if you notice anything strange, take the vehicle to a trusted auto repair shop immediately.

You’re experiencing poor performance in cold weather

In a place like Wisconsin, cold weather is the norm throughout the winter—that means you need to be especially mindful of the condition of your battery. When temperatures drop, batteries can freeze, slowing down the chemical reactions required to power your car and reducing performance of the battery.

Battery life drains quickly in the winter since maximum current is required to power your car in cold weather. A newer battery will manage cold temperatures more efficiently, so you’ll never have to be worried about getting stranded on the side of the road in inclement weather.

You smell a strange, new odor

One of the most telltale signs of a failing battery is a strange, foul smell similar to rotten eggs. This odor is usually an indication that the battery is leaking gas. You need to take your vehicle to your preferred auto service shop right away, since these destructive gases can damage multiple parts of your vehicle.

Replacing your car battery is essential if you notice any of the signs described above while operating your car. Bring your vehicle to the experts at

Why Do I Need to Get Regular Tire Rotations?

y probably isn’t at the top of your list of “things to do for a good time.” But it should definitely be near the top for “ways to keep you and your family safe while driving in your car.”

It’s not something you need to do very often, but rotating your tires is something that should be done on a regular basis. Tire rotation importance should not be overlooked, as it can not only keep everyone in the car safe, but it can also save you money on car maintenance. Here are some more benefits of tire rotation.

Proper rotation makes tires last longer

Tires wear out—it’s just a fact of life. They are not meant to last forever, but there are some things you can do to extend the life of those tires as much as possible. One of the things you can do to make your tires last longer is to have them rotated regularly. On most vehicles, you should have this done once every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.

A good way to make sure you have your tires rotated regularly is to have them rotated when you bring the car in for an oil change. Since both services are typically recommended to follow roughly the same schedule, this is an efficient way to keep up with proper car maintenance.

Tires wear evenly when rotated regularly

You may have noticed that there’s a difference between the wear on your front tires compared to your rear tires. That’s because front tires tend to wear more quickly, especially in cars with front wheel drive. Tires that have worn too unevenly can lead to poor handling on the road, especially in slippery conditions.

          Rotation can uncover lurking problems

Tires can sometimes develop problems like cupping and blistering (bulging) in the sidewall. Cupping refers to uneven wear on the tread of an individual tire, and it could lead to poor handling or braking. Blistering can lead to a flat tire or a blowout when driving. Since we generally don’t spend a lot of time checking out our tires, these problems may go unnoticed until it’s too late. One of the benefits of regular tire rotations is that these issues will likely be caught and can be fixed sooner rather than later.

There’s a reason for the saying “where the rubber meets the road.” It means that this is the bottom line, that this is what matters when all is said and done—because when all is said and done, this is the part of your car that connects it to the ground, and if this part is not secure and functioning properly, then nothing else under the hood or inside the car will matter.

Ways to Protect Your Car’s Engine

A reliable car can get you far in life (no pun intended). Knowing you will be able to make your appointments on time, get to and from work and run errands without car trouble makes life much easier. One way to help make this a reality is to get a reliable vehicle. But even the most reliable vehicles will need proper maintenance to keep working well, and that means it’s up to you to protect your car’s engine.

When it comes to how to protect the engine, there are a few things to consider. Thankfully, most basic maintenance items don’t require any serious automotive expertise to address. Here are some ways you can protect your car’s engine.

          Regular oil changes

Getting regular oil changes is one of the easiest and most important things you can do to protect your car’s engine. Modern cars need an oil change once every 5,000 miles (some may be able to go for longer between oil changes, so check your owner’s manual), while older vehicles should get one once every 3,000 miles. That usually translates to getting an oil change two to three times per year.

When the oil is changed, the oil filter should be changed as well. This is standard practice when you take your car to get an oil change. Remember, it’s okay to decline requests for additional services if all you want is an oil change!

          Check the air filter

Another good thing to do on the same schedule as your oil changes is check the air filter. Making sure the air filter is clear of debris and not caked with dust or dirt is a good way to protect your car’s engine. When you take your car in for an oil change, you can ask to have this checked—it’s often done at no extra charge, and can usually be replaced quickly on the spot if needed.

          Don’t run on empty

Your car’s gas tank will begin to collect sediment from gasoline after a while. The fuel filter catches a lot of this, but some of it eventually settles at the bottom of the gas tank. Consistently driving your car until it’s very low on gas can pull up that sediment and run it through the fuel filter, which can cause engine damage. To avoid making your engine work harder than it needs to, you should always try to keep from running too low on gas.

          Look for leaks

Leaks are a sign that your car’s engine is unhealthy, so it’s a good idea to keep an eye out for any leaks that appear underneath your car. If you notice fluids dripping from your car (other than normal condensation from your AC system), or oil stains starting to form in your normal parking space, don’t let it slide. Take your car to a mechanic to have it checked out as soon as possible.

Protecting your car’s engine starts with being attentive to regular maintenance. You don’t have to know how to work on cars to keep it running well, but it’s important to keep a regular maintenance schedule.
How to Know Your Heater Core Is Going Bad

Winter is the worst time for your car’s heater to be acting up. The heater core is responsible for warming up the air when you increase the temperature. It also warms the air for the defroster so you can see out the windshield despite the frigid air. Let’s look at the leading signs that your car’s heater core is going bad.

          Fog on the interior

Maybe you’ve noticed fog is collecting on the inside of the windshield and windows in your car. There are two possible reasons for this. One is that the heater core is malfunctioning and, therefore, the defrosters aren’t working properly. The other possibility is that fog or smoke is being blown into the car’s cabin, which is also a bad sign. Either way, it’s best to have a professional mechanic check it out.

          Strange smells

If you smell something sweet that’s reminiscent of fruit, this is one of the signs your car needs a new heater. The odd smell is the sign of a radiator fluid leak. This means that coolant is leaking into your car. Check the ground after you’ve parked the car to see how much has spilled out. Here again, you’ll want to have this problem addressed quickly by an automotive technician.

          Chilly passenger compartment

This isn’t always a sign of a faulty heater core. It’s possible that your car has a blower motor or another part that has gone bad. That said, a lack of heat in the cabin is often due to the heater core malfunctioning. What often happens is that a hole develops in the heater core and all the warm air escapes quickly before it ever reaches the heater’s ducts. This means that cooler air is circulating inside—the exact opposite of what you want.

Air isn’t flowing through the vents

You turn on the heater, but there isn’t any air coming through. There are two possibilities here. One is that the blower motor is faulty, which means the fan speed doesn’t change. If you can feel a bit of residual warmth from the vents, then this is likely the case. But if you don’t feel even the slightest bit of warmth coming through, then it’s probably an issue with the heater core.

          Frequent coolant loss

If your car is devouring coolant, this is a bad sign. It typically means there’s a coolant leak in the heater core. When you top off the coolant only to find that it’s low again the next day, bring it in right away for inspection.

          Cold cabin/hot engine

Perhaps the interior of your car is cold—despite having the heater on—but the engine is still hot. Again, this is likely an issue with the coolant that can be linked to the heater core. The coolant is leaking before it ever gets to the engine.

Signs It’s Time to Change Your Brakes

          Quality brake pads that are

installed correctly should last for several years, up to 50,000 miles. That said, how long your brakes last is dependent on several factors, including how much you drive and your driving style. If you’re in stop-and-go traffic frequently, expect that your brakes will need to be replaced sooner.

Fortunately, there are several signs you need new brakes that will tip you off when the time comes. Let’s look at the indicators of when to replace brake pads.

          Squeaking, squealing and grinding

When brakes are nearing the end of their useful life, one of the first things many drivers notice is a squeaking or squealing sound coming from the brakes. This is due to worn-down brake pads. In fact, most brake pads have metal wear indicators built in to alert you that you need to have them replaced.

If you begin to hear a grinding sound, that’s a sign that the brake pads are completely worn out. This is a leading indicator that you need new brake rotors, as grinding can damage the rotors. It’s best to get the brake pads fixed now, before they become a major problem.

          Stopping power

Another sign that your car’s brake pads need to be replaced is that they’re not performing as they should. When your car takes longer to stop, this is a sign that either the brake pads are worn down or the brake fluid is low due to a leak. You need your car’s brakes to be working properly to ensure your safety. To get to the root of the problem, schedule an appointment with a brake mechanic.

          Indicator light

Many newer vehicles have indicator lights that will inform you if there’s an issue with your brakes. A sensor on the brake pad will trigger after the pad has worn down. When this light appears on the dashboard, it’s time to bring your car to a trusted technician.

          Vibrating brakes

Another sign that the brakes have gone is the brake pedal beginning to vibrate. If it’s difficult to apply pressure to the brakes or it feels unsteady when you press down, these are indicators that the brake pads are no longer functioning. Have this fixed right away to avoid hazards—you need properly working brakes to avoid accidents.

          Brake pads are worn thin

You can also inspect the brake pads yourself to see what kind of condition they’re in. Look between the spokes of the wheel and find the brake pad. If the pads appear to be worn down—less than a quarter inch thick—then you’ve found the source of the problem.

How to Take Care of Your Car’s Clutch

Do you know how to take care of your car’s clutch? If you’re not maintaining your car’s transmission, you may have serious problems in the future. Whether you need to learn how to shift properly, how to stop on a hill or how much weight your vehicle can tow, we suggest you break these habits to protect your car’s clutch in the future.

Here are our best tips to protect your car’s clutch and maintain your car’s transmission:

           Avoid riding the clutch:

Riding the clutch means keeping your foot on the pedal while driving, rather than fully depressing and disengaging the clutch. This wears out your throw-out bearing faster than normal. Only press the clutch when you need to, and keep your foot on the floor when driving.

           Don’t let your vehicle overheat:

Overheating is death to your engine, transmission and clutch. Excessive heat leads to too much wear and tear. In turn, components wear out faster, and your fluids may not be able to cool the engine and transmission efficiently.

           Test your thermostat:

Watch your car’s thermostat carefully. It should go up steadily as you drive, then stay at a constant temperature during operation. If you notice anomalies in the thermostat, it can indicate problems with your clutch. Take your vehicle in for repairs if you notice this issue.

           Perform regular vehicle maintenance:

Preventative maintenance is the greatest gift you can give yourself. Regularly maintaining your care ensures that your car is ready to go the distance when you need it. Every week, drive with the radio turned off, and listen for odd noises or other indications that you might have a problem.

           Change your fluids:

Regular maintenance also includes changing fluids. Your oil, transmission, brake and wiper fluids should all be changed regularly. They all perform important lubricating and cooling functions, which will impact your clutch performance directly or indirectly.

Don’t tow more than you can handle:

Before you start towing anything (be it a boat, other vehicles or a trailer), make sure that your vehicle can handle the load. If it can’t, you run the risk of burning out the clutch before its time.

Learn to properly stop on a hill:

Some people use their clutch instead of a brake when stopping on a hill. This is a bad idea. Don’t rely on your clutch. Use your regular brake to stop, and, if you need a backup, hit the emergency brake. This will prevent you from rolling backwards.

is an important part of general vehicle maintenance. For the most part, it’s a matter of common sense: Don’t push your vehicle; keep up with basic preventative maintenance; watch for signs of strange behavior. However, you may notice other issues over time. When that happens, make sure you take your car into Pat Doll Automotive LLC. We can help you keep an eye on your clutch, perform any repairs you may need and keep you on the road for years to come. Call today to get started.

Car Maintenance Tips When You Buy a Used Car

Buying a used car can be a mixed bag. On one hand, you’re getting a vehicle at a heavily discounted price, which could very well serve you for a decade or more. On the other hand, the warranties have usually expired, and, unless you’re a skilled mechanic, you may not know exactly what you’re getting.

So, what kind of maintenance should you have done after you buy a used car?

Here’s how to make the most out of your new used car:

           Look at the manual:

The first thing you should do is read the owner’s manual for your new car. Unless you’ve owned the exact same model before, the maintenance schedule and suggestions may be different. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with what your car needs to function properly. Not only will you stay on top of maintenance needs, but you’ll be in a better position to figure out what’s wrong with your car when something goes awry.

           Stick to the maintenance schedule:

Your owner’s manual has a suggested maintenance schedule, usually based on mileage. Stick to that schedule, even if the previous owner has assured you that they recently performed those very tasks. Not only will you keep your car properly maintained, but you’ll rest assured knowing you’ve done everything possible to keep your car running smoothly.

           Change the oil:

One of the easiest maintenance tasks to address is an oil change. Since your oil needs to be changed relatively frequently, depending on how much the car has been driven, it won’t hurt to take care of this simple job.

           Get it cleaned and detailed:

Depending on the condition of your car when you get it, you’ll probably want to have it professionally cleaned and detailed. Not only will your detailing pros take care of all the dirt and grime you don’t want to handle, but it will also make your car feel like a brand-new vehicle. Why not start off with a fresh and clean car?

           Change the other fluids:

Changing the rest of your vehicle fluids is also a good idea. Wiper, transmission, radiator and brake fluids all need to be replaced regularly. Since you can’t necessarily trust that the previous owner kept up with regular maintenance, this will ensure that you’re starting as fresh as possible.

           Check and rotate the tires:

Finally, make sure that you check your tire pressure and have the tires rotated. This ensures even wear over time until it’s time to replace the tires.

Buying a used car is a smart decision, as long as you do your research and the seller is trustworthy. Doing a little extra maintenance when you bring it home is the best way to guarantee that your new-to-you vehicle will perform properly for years to come.

          Jumper cables

You don’t want to be stuck on the side of the road or in a parking lot with a dead battery. A good set of jumper cables can easily have your battery up and running again in no time. To use jumper cables, you’d simply need to find another vehicle owner willing to help, then follow the proper steps to connect your battery to theirs.

Be sure to stay safe when asking a stranger for help jumping your car. It’s always best to have someone you know and trust assist you if you can.

          A spare tire

Most drivers have experienced a flat tire at one point in their lives. If you don’t have a spare, you may end up having to wait a long time for roadside assistance or someone else to come help. That’s why it’s important to always have a spare tire and the tools necessary for changing a tire on hand. These tools include a lug wrench and jack. While it’s usually easy to replace a flat tire, don’t avoid calling for help if you need it.

          A first aid kit

You never know what might happen on the road. It’s good to keep a first aid kit nearby in case you or one of your passengers gets injured. In the event of an accident, you should call emergency services. That said, having bandages and other medical equipment in your vehicle could help address minor injuries in an emergency situation.

          Some windshield wiper fluid

Many people don’t think about keeping extra windshield wiper fluid in their vehicles, but it’s a good item to have on hand. Windshield wiper fluid is especially useful in areas with routine snowfall. Be sure to only buy top-quality wiper fluid, as inferior products may not effectively remove debris from your windshield. Some lower-quality wiper fluids can even make your visibility worse.

          WD-40 or another quality lubricant

It’s always good to have a bottle of WD-40 on hand. If you’re trying to change a tire and the lug nuts are too tight, simply spray some WD-40 on them. This should loosen those lug nuts right up. WD-40 can also help in the removal of dirt, grime and grease.

These are the five items we believe every car owner needs to have on hand. There are, of course, plenty of other great tools you could keep in your vehicle for emergency situations, including a flashlight, phone charger, duct tape and many more.

Engine failure is one of the most serious conditions a vehicle might experience. If you suspect that your vehicle is experiencing engine failure, it’s important to visit an

right away. That said, it can sometimes be difficult to determine what is actually wrong with your vehicle. Read on for some of the most common warning signs that your car’s engine needs to get checked:

The check engine light is on:

If your check engine light is on, it’s best to consult a mechanic right away. Sometimes, a check engine light can signal a small issue. However, it’s smart to have a mechanic check it anyway, because there may be a major problem with your vehicle. Diagnosing these big issues early can help prevent long-term damage to your car.

           Clouds of smoke:

Increased smoke coming from your vehicle’s tailpipe could mean there’s an issue with the engine. As with all other issues mentioned on this list, it’s important to visit a professional if you notice increased exhaust. There are several different issues that might cause increased exhaust, including the presence of coolant in your vehicle’s combustion chamber.

           Strange smells:

It’s never a good sign if your vehicle is emitting strange smells. Noxious odors, specifically, could signal a problem with the engine.

           Strange sounds:

Abnormal sounds, like knocking or hissing, can also signal an issue with your vehicle’s engine. Certain sounds could mean your vehicle has a failing engine bearing, or that there’s an issue with the combustion flow. Sounds to listen for include spitting, backfiring and popping.

           Bad gas mileage:

A noticeable decrease in gas mileage can sometimes mean the compression stroke of your vehicle’s engine is experiencing issues. There are many possible ways to resolve bad gas mileage, though it’s best to have a mechanic diagnose the exact cause of the problem. This can help prevent you from putting money into fuel cleaners and similar products that won’t actually resolve the issue.

           The engine stalls:

A stalling engine is a scary experience. While they are sometimes common when driving a stick shift, the engine should never stall when driving an automatic. That said, if you drive a stick shift and your engine is constantly stalling, you should bring your car to an auto shop right away.

           The engine runs roughly:

A rough idle could mean that something is clogging your engine system. Old spark plugs and a low battery can sometimes cause a rough running engine as well. Sometimes, there’s a quick and simple solution to a rough running engine. A good auto repair shop might be able to get your engine running smoothly again with a simple tune-up.

If you’re wondering how to check to see if an engine is healthy, just bring your vehicle to a reputable local mechanic. Spotting the top signs of engine failure early can help prevent further damage to your vehicle and decrease your chances of experiencing an issue while driving.

What Does Wildfire Smoke Do to Your Car?

Wildfires in the Western United States have become increasingly common each summer. These fires aren’t just devastating for forests and wildlife—wildfires can also be a serious concern for vehicles. Even if you’re not driving through an area where a fire is burning, wildfire smoke can take a significant toll on your car, truck or SUV. Continue reading to learn how wildfires affect your vehicle.

You’re breathing in dangerous air when wildfire smoke enters your vehicle’s cabin. That smoke can also cause engine damage as ash and other debris flow through your car’s grill. Your best protection against these wildfires is to swap out your engine and cabin air filters.

Experts generally recommend switching your filters every 25,000 to 45,000 miles, but if wildfires are in your area, we recommend changing your filters much sooner than that. New filters are fairly inexpensive, and they’re your best defense against polluted air and engine damage. Talk to your mechanic about how frequently you should change your engine and cabin air filters.

What if you have to drive through wildfire smoke?

Hopefully, you’ll never be put in a situation in which you have to drive through an area with ongoing wildfires, but that’s not a given anymore due to global warming. Be sure to keep the windows closed if you are driving in an area with heavy wildfire smoke. If your car has one, hit the air recirculation button to cut off outside air and limit your exposure.

Find a place to pull over if the smoke becomes too heavy to see through. Dense smoke doesn’t just make driving dangerous—it overwhelms the engine filter and allows tons of contaminants inside.

Because wildfires can be a serious concern for vehicles, we recommend taking your car in for an inspection as soon as you make it through the dangerous area. A professional can check your vehicle to find any problems or replace your filters if needed.

Other signs you need to replace your filters

Watching the odometer is a good way to tell if it’s time for new engine or cabin air filters. But your filters may need to be replaced sooner than expected, especially if you’re subjected to wildfire smoke or heavy pollution.

A few signs that it’s time to change the engine filter include the smell of gas when you start the car, lower horsepower or black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe. Additionally, the check engine light may turn on when the filter needs to be replaced.

The first things you’ll notice when your cabin air filter starts to fail are restricted airflow from the vents or bad odors when the heat or AC is on. You may also hear louder fan noises, as your vehicle has to work overtime to push air through those dirty vents.

What to Check Before Buying a Used Car

Opting to purchase a used car instead of a brand-new one is a great way to save yourself a bundle of money. However, buying a secondhand vehicle can turn into a major regret if you don’t do your research before making the purchase. Keep reading to learn what to check for when buying a used car:

           Vehicle history:

You want to know the background of the used car before making a purchase. Services like Carfax can give you tons of information about the used car, including whether it’s been in any accidents or there are any liens on it.

           Rust or paint damage:

Take a walk around the car to look for any visual flaws. Some minor rust or paint damage shouldn’t necessarily be a deal-breaker because it’s an easy fix.

           Under the hood:

You can’t neglect the engine in terms of what to check for when buying a used car. Pop the hood and check for any signs of fluid leaks, corrosion or cracked hoses and belts.

           Tire condition:

The tread wear on all four tires should be even. Any uneven tread could indicate poor alignment, which can cost a pretty penny to correct once you’ve purchased the vehicle.

           Mileage:

High-mileage vehicles often have more wear and tear and can break down much more frequently. The average driver puts about 14,000 miles on their vehicle each year. To see if the car has too many miles on it, divide the number on the odometer by the vehicle’s age.

           Heat and AC:

A properly functioning heater and air conditioner are musts to keep you comfortable during your commute. Crank the heat and then the AC to verify that they’re both in working order.

           Upholstery:

Wear and tear on the seats and interior fabric doesn’t make the vehicle drive any worse. However, upholstery is still on our list of what to inspect for when buying a second-hand vehicle. Think twice about buying a car with beat-up upholstery.

           Test drive:

It doesn’t matter if you’re buying new or used—you always need to take the vehicle out for a test drive. Put the car through the wringer to test for acceleration, braking and maneuverability. You should also take it out onto the highway to ensure it’s stable and smooth at higher speeds.

           Mechanic inspection:

If possible, we recommend bringing the vehicle in question to a mechanic for an inspection before signing any documents. A trained professional can identify any problems you may have missed while inspecting the items above.

          Let us inspect your vehicle

How to Lower Your Auto Maintenance Costs

Besides your monthly car payment, routine maintenance is often one of the more expensive aspects of owning a vehicle. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be if you follow a few simple tips. Keep reading to learn how to lower your auto maintenance costs.

          Make a smart buying decision

Lowering your maintenance costs starts on day one when you first buy your vehicle. Luxury European cars like BMWs and Land Rovers typically have higher maintenance costs. Additionally, they’re known to have more troubles than American or Japanese models.

Another way to cut costs is to only purchase what you need. For example, if you don’t need a large diesel truck—which requires more expensive maintenance—don’t buy one!

Regularly change your oil and oil filter

There’s a reason manufacturers and mechanics recommend getting an oil change every few thousand miles. Oil gets dirty over time, which may cause significant engine damage. Your owner’s manual will tell you how frequently you should change your oil.

Your oil filter also gets dirty as you pile on miles, which can lead to blockages that fry your engine. A mechanic will swap your oil filter each time you get an oil change.

Use your manufacturer’s recommended oil type

Despite what an inexperienced mechanic may tell you or what you read online, you should always use the oil your manufacturer recommends. Your manufacturer built the engine in a specific way to run on a particular type of oil.

Using the right oil can extend your vehicle’s lifespan and prevent a variety of engine problems. Though your oil changes may cost a bit more than if you choose a generic brand, this extra expense will pay for itself in the long run.

          Be smart on the road

Another way to lower your auto maintenance costs and reduce the chance of accidents is to drive smart. Breaking the speed limit, slamming on the brakes and making fast turns all take a toll on your vehicle.

By driving smart and following the rules of the road, you’ll lower the risk of damaging your vehicle and paying for expensive tune-ups and repairs.

          Get tune-ups as needed

Regardless of how you drive, your car will still need a tune-up now and then to prevent breakdowns and improve your engine performance. Pay attention to your mechanic’s advice, and always come in for routine maintenance at the recommended intervals.

During a tune-up, your mechanic will perform a full inspection of your vehicle and replace sparkplugs and belts and hoses and refill any fluids. Tune-ups aren’t free, but they are cheaper than emergency repairs.

How to Read Your Tire Size

If you’ve ever paid close attention to your tires, you may have noticed that there are a lot of confusing letters and numbers printed on the sidewall. These numbers and letters indicate the tire’s size, type and performance rating.

It might seem like all of this information is just for auto mechanics, but it’s something that each driver should know. Continue reading to learn how to measure your tire:

           Tire type:

The first letter on your tire stands for its type. A “P” indicates that it’s a tire designed for a passenger vehicle, while an “LT” means it’s for a light truck. Other letters include “T” for temporary tires, “ST” for trailer tires and “C” for commercial tires. Different tire types require different inflation levels; consult your owner’s manual to learn more.

           Tire width:

A tire’s width is measured from sidewall to sidewall. The first three-digit number after the letter is the tire’s width, measured in millimeters. So a tire that reads “P215” has a width of 215 millimeters.

           Aspect ratio:

The aspect ratio is the height of the tire’s cross section to its width. The larger the aspect ratio, the bigger the sidewall. This ratio is indicated on the sidewall by a two-digit number after a slash mark on the tire. Our tire mentioned above may read “P215/65”; this means the tire’s height is 65 percent of its width.

           Construction:

Following the two-digit number, you’ll find another letter that indicates how the tire was constructed. The most common letters are “R” for radial, “B” for bias-belted and “D” for diagonal bias. The construction type depends on the type of vehicle the tire is for.

           Wheel diameter:

The next thing to look for in how to read your tire is the wheel diameter, which tells you the size of the wheel that the tire is intended to fit. This is indicated by another two-digit number following the construction letter. Our “P215/65 R15” tire is made for a passenger vehicle with a wheel diameter of 15 inches.

           Load index:

The load index shows the tire’s weight-carrying capacity and is indicated by a two-digit number following the wheel diameter. However, it’s important to note that the number is just a representative symbol and does not numerically correspond to the actual carrying capacity. For example, a 95 doesn’t represent 95 pounds.

           Speed rating:

As the name implies, the tire’s speed rating is the maximum speed capability of the tire. The letter varies based on a few different factors, including the tire’s construction and size. There are many different letters that can be used. An example would be an “S,” indicating the tire cannot safely travel more than 112 miles per hour.

How Do I Choose a Mechanic for My Car?

If you’re having car trouble, you’ll soon find that there’s no shortage of mechanics in your area. This can be a good thing, as it offers you options when deciding where to get your car fixed.

But it can also be daunting because you don’t know which mechanic to choose. So, you may be wondering, “How do I choose a mechanic for my car?” This article will answer that question by offering questions to ask your mechanic.

Do you have experience working on my car’s make and model?

Each car is unique, and it’s impossible for every mechanic to have worked on every single type of car, so finding out if they’ve worked on your type of car can help you decide if you want to hire that mechanic. If you have a Honda SUV, it will stand to reason you’d want to select a mechanic who’s worked on Hondas, SUVs or your specific Honda SUV.

What certifications do your mechanics have?

To date, there are just under 300,000 mechanics that are certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). To earn their ASE certification, a mechanic must pass a written test and have years of field experience working as a mechanic. ASE-certified technicians are retested often to ensure they keep up with the latest technology. It’s easy to see why you’d want an ASE-certified technician to work on your car.

          When was your business founded?

If you’re looking for a mechanic and you find one that’s been in business for multiple decades, they must be doing something right. It’s likely that they not only have loads of experience but that they do quality work as well. This could also speak to their customer service, as people who are satisfied become repeat customers. If the shop was lacking in these areas, then the business would have likely folded long ago.

Can you provide references from previous customers?

While you could and should conduct some online research of your own, asking a mechanic to provide references from previous customers they’ve serviced is a perfectly reasonable request. A quality auto repair shop should be able to put you in touch with multiple people who can speak to the excellence of their work.

Can I get a free estimate?

Some auto repair shops offer free estimates—others do not. If the estimate will not be free, you should inquire about how the cost is determined. For example, you can ask if there will be a flat fee or if it will be billed by the hour. Charging for an estimate shouldn’t be considered a deal-breaker, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

Will I receive an itemized invoice of all the repairs performed?

This is a crucial piece of information for you to have because it documents exactly what was done to your car, when it was done and how much it cost. For warranty and insurance purposes (and if you ever decide to sell your car), you need assurance that you’ll receive this, so this should be something you ask your mechanic.

How to Jump-Start Your Car

There are few things that can stop you in your tracks faster than a dead car battery. Whether you accidentally left your headlights on, the dome light on or a door or the trunk ajar, having your car battery die is a massive inconvenience—which is why it helps to know how to jump-start your car.

While you can charge your car with a battery charger, sometimes your car’s battery may die when you’re out and about. In that case, you’ll need to use someone else’s car to give yours a jump. Here’s how to jump-start your car.

          What you’ll need

You should always keep a pair of jumper cables in your car in case of an emergency; you’ll need these to jump-start your car. It’s also helpful to have a copy of the car’s manual in your car, so you can connect the jumper cables in the proper order. Lastly, you’ll need another car with a working battery that has a voltage equal to yours.

          A note on safety

Remember that the cables you’ll be connecting are meant to carry electrical current from one battery to another, so they should be treated with great care and hooked up correctly. Because of where the battery is located and the amount of fumes present, you’ll want to avoid creating sparks. If you have any doubts or are unsure, call a professional. Here’s what else you need to know:

Park both vehicles next to each other:

The two vehicles should be about a foot and a half apart but should not be touching. Put both cars in park.

           Turn both cars off:

Both cars should now be turned off. Set the parking brakes on both so that they don’t roll away, and take out the keys. Put both cables on the ground for now, ensuring that they don’t touch each other.

           Attach the red cables:

Though you should consult your car’s manual before attaching the cables, here’s one way to do it. Pop the hood on both cars, and find the batteries. The terminals should be clearly labeled. You’ll take the red cable (which is usually positive) and clamp it onto the positive terminal of the dead battery, followed by hooking it to the battery that works.

           Attach the black cables:

Then you’ll take the black cable (or the negative cable) and hook it to the working battery’s negative terminal. Finally, take the free end of the black cable, and attach it to an unpainted metal surface on the car. A clean nut on the engine block works. Don’t attach it to the negative terminal of the dead battery.

           Start the functioning car:

You can now start the working vehicle and wait a couple minutes. Depending on the age of the battery and how dead it is, you may need to let the car run for a few minutes.

           Start the nonfunctioning car:

At this point, the dead car should start. If it doesn’t, give the working car a few more minutes to run. Rev the engine of the working car if the dead car won’t start.

           Disconnect the cables:

Remove the black cables first and then the red ones, not letting the cables touch each other.

           Let the car run:

Take a short drive to let the car recharge itself, or let it run for about 15 minutes.

Great Ways to Cool Down the Interior of a Hot Car

With summer fast approaching, there’s much to look forward to, including warm weather, sunny skies, longer days and more. This warmer weather comes at a price, though: after hours in the hot sun, your vehicle may have basically become an oven. Your seats and dashboard are scalding hot, and you might find it near impossible to grab the steering wheel. A hot car is always distressing, especially if you’re trying to gain some relief from the summer sun.

Thankfully, you’ll be glad to know there are plenty of ways of cooling your car’s interior during our warm Hartford, WI summers. While your car won’t cool down in an instant, using the methods listed below can help cut down your time baking in the summer heat:

           Open the windows:

This is a tried-and-true method of cooling your car’s interior during the summer. This usually works best when the car is moving, but letting out any interior heat is a good thing. Many people recommend leaving your windows cracked just a little when leaving your vehicle in the hot sun. This allows for better ventilation, but might be an issue if you’re in an area with high vehicle brake-in rates.

           Crank up the air conditioner:

A good air conditioner will be your best friend during the summer. That’s why it’s important to have your car’s AC system checked by a

service provider in your area before the summer months hit. You don’t want to end up needing your AC on a hot day only to find out it’s not working. It’s also a good idea to leave your windows cracked for a moment while you’re blasting the AC. This will help the hot air trapped within the car escape, thus cooling it down more quickly.

           Start driving:

Whether you have your windows down or your AC running, the vehicle will usually cool down faster as you’re driving. Driving will promote air circulation in your car, allowing cool air to quickly hit every corner of your vehicle.

Use your car door to fan the interior:

Create a fanning system inside your vehicle by opening both front windows, then continuously opening and closing one of the front doors. While it might look silly, this makeshift “fan” will help push some of that hot air out and allow you to drive in comfort.

As mentioned above, it’s important to have proper maintenance performed on your vehicle’s AC system to prevent it from breaking down in the summer. Bring your vehicle to a reputable auto repair shop and ask them to check for any possible issues with the AC system. It’s usually best to have the AC system checked at least once a year.

There are several things a mechanic might do to maintain your AC system, including changing out your filters, adding coolant, checking for leaks and more. During an AC system check, you’ll also be informed of any components that need repairs or replacing.

If you’re on the fence about having a complete brake job done, it’s best to take the advice from a trusted auto repair shop in your area. Hartford, WI drivers wondering what a complete brake job is should read on for more information!

What happens during a complete brake job?

As mentioned above, a complete brake job involves maintaining all components of your braking system, not just the brake pads. A standard brake job will not usually include work on all your braking system components, just the parts that need maintenance. This sometimes means having rotors replaced or resurfaced, installing new brake linings, replacing brake hoses and more. Brake fluids and lubricants are often checked as well.

As for the average cost of a complete brake job, it all depends on the amount of work your braking system needs. A repair shop will give you an estimate before starting any work.

How to tell when you need a complete brake job

Any issues with your brakes could signal the need for a complete brake job. Brake pads should usually be changed every 50,000 miles or so. This can all depend on many factors, though. For example, those living in cities with heavy traffic may have to change their brakes more frequently due to constant braking. Those who own heavier vehicles may need their brakes changed much more often as well.

Common signs of bad brakes include squeaking or squealing noises when braking, your vehicle taking a long time to stop, a vibrating brake pedal and more. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s best to have a brake inspection done. During this brake inspection, your mechanic will determine whether a complete brake job is necessary.

Benefits of a complete brake job

Since brake pads tend to wear out quicker than other braking components, some people find a complete brake job unnecessary. While you probably won’t need a complete brake job done every time you have your brakes changed, it’s a good idea to always have your mechanic check for any additional issues. A complete brake job ensures your braking system is up to the task of bringing your vehicle to a complete stop, every time.

Every component of your braking system is important in ensuring you can properly stop your vehicle. If you put off any repairs or maintenance for too long, it could result in more expensive repairs. You may also end up putting yourself in a dangerous situation due to faulty brakes.

In the last year, our understanding of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has changed significantly. As we learn more about the virus and how it spreads, lots of people have questions about what they can do to minimize their risk of infection and keep themselves and their families safe. Many people wonder whether car air conditioning and COVID-19 in Hartford, WI are related and, if so, whether adjustments to AC usage can reduce the risk of infection. Keep reading to learn more about the novel coronavirus and car air conditioning.

There are still a lot of things that are unknown about the novel coronavirus, but experts agree that air circulation is an important consideration when it comes to the spread of the virus. A lot of people wonder whether car air conditioning and COVID-19 in Hartford, WI are linked, and whether COVID-19 can be spread to passengers in a car through the air conditioning system. The good news is that there is no evidence of COVID-19 spreading through vehicle AC systems, so this is likely not something people need to be concerned about.

Even though COVID-19 is unlikely to spread through an AC system, there are still some things drivers should be aware of when it comes to their car air conditioning and COVID-19 in Hartford, WI. For one thing, it’s important to keep in mind that airflow can have a huge effect on the likelihood of airborne COVID-19 transmission. The better the circulation in an environment, the less likely it is that COVID-19 will be transmitted from one person to another. This is why public health officials have encouraged people to avoid gathering indoors and instead go outside for exercise, dining and socialization.

Considering how important air circulation is when it comes to minimizing the spread of COVID-19, it’s not surprising that improving airflow in a vehicle can reduce the risk of spreading the virus. When using AC while driving with other people, don’t activate the setting that recirculates air inside the car. Instead, make sure the air that’s coming into the AC system is fresh air from outside.

Anything that improves air circulation in a vehicle is helpful in preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus from person to person. Even small adjustments can help promote air circulation and contribute to a much lower risk of the spread of the virus while driving with passengers. For added circulation, consider rolling down the windows slightly to promote better airflow and reduce the risk of spread even more.

Now that the weather has warmed up, chances are you are spending more time exploring outside, and you need to make sure your car can reliably get you where you need to go. Unfortunately, there are a lot of car problems that are more common during the summer months due to the rising temperatures. Keep reading to learn about warm weather’s effects on brakes in Hartford, WI and how to keep your car protected all season long.

It’s important to understand the connection between summertime and your brakes in Hartford, WI. Brakes work by creating friction that brings a car’s wheels to a stop, so there is naturally a lot of heat created during the process. During the cooler months, this heat dissipates quickly. However, when the weather is hot, the heat generated during braking does not dissipate as quickly. When brakes get too overheated, they can become less effective and more unpredictable on the road, leading to a lot of problems with safety and performance.

Preventing braking problems during the summer

Considering some of the warm weather effects on brakes in Hartford, WI, it’s a good idea to think about some of the ways you can prevent braking problems during the summer. Here are a few tips to help minimize the negative effects of heat on braking performance:

           Practice gradual braking:

The harder you press down on the brakes, the more friction is created when the car is stopping. To minimize the friction and heat generated while braking, try to brake more gradually. Ease into turns and give yourself plenty of space to stop before reaching an intersection to minimize wear and tear on brakes. As an added benefit, gradual braking and acceleration can also have a positive effect on fuel economy.

           Get brakes inspected regularly:

A great way to minimize the negative effects of hot weather on brakes is to have your brakes inspected regularly. Attempting to brake with old, worn-out brake pads is more likely to create performance and safety problems. Get your brakes inspected regularly to make sure they are still in good condition for summer road performance.

Keep up with maintenance and preventative repairs:

In addition to having your brakes inspected on a regular basis, it’s also important to invest in routine maintenance and preventative repairs. Maintenance appointments are important before the summer months to get all of your vehicle’s fluids topped off and make sure everything is working the way it should. In addition, it’s important to have brake pads replaced if they’re becoming worn out to prevent any issues with performance during the summer months

Which Auto Fluids to Check on a Regular Basis

Checking the fluids in your vehicle is an important part of ongoing maintenance. Keeping the fluid at proper levels and ensuring it’s in good, fresh condition impacts most functions of your vehicle, and ensures good fuel economy and engine longevity.

As a general rule, you should check your oil every 5,000 miles or so (when using synthetic oil), and check all other fluids at the same time—usually every few months when you get vehicle tune-ups or perform some standard maintenance in Hartford, WI. But which fluids do you need to check, and how do you find them?

Here’s a quick overview of what you need to know:

           Oil:

The dipstick for your engine oil will be close to the front of the engine if you drive a front-wheel drive vehicle, or behind the engine if you drive a rear-wheel drive vehicle. Your vehicle manufacturer might have made this easy on you with a cap that features an “engine oil” label or image. To check the oil, pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag, then put the dipstick all the way back in and pull it out again. This will show you where the oil is on the stick and where it falls between the “full” and “add” levels. Keep the oil close to the “full” line, and make sure it’s a nice yellow or amber color. It gets dark when it’s ready to be changed.

           Power steering fluid:

The engine bay will have a dipstick or reservoir cap labeled for power steering fluid. The process for checking the dipstick is the same as engine oil. The fluid should be the color of white wine, and may have a pinkish hue.

           Coolant:

To find the coolant, look for the radiator cap that will be labeled “engine coolant” or “antifreeze.” Open it and make sure the fluid is close to the top. You can find coolant in a wide range of colors. Make sure you never mix coolants—whenever adding more, it should be the same kind you already have in your vehicle, and that which is recommended by the manufacturer.

           Brake fluid:

Find the cap for the brake fluid, take it off and look at the level and color. Good-quality brake fluid should always be the color of white wine or have an amber hue, and the fluid should be positioned close to the top of the reservoir.

           Windshield washer fluid:

You’ll typically find this fluid in blue, green or an orange/red mixture. This is the easiest fluid to find under the hood, and usually has a windshield icon. All you need to do is pour in new fluid until the reservoir is full.

           Transmission fluid:

Some cars have a dipstick to check transmission fluid, but others are harder to check and will need a mechanic’s assistance. If you have a dipstick for transmission fluid, the process for checking is similar to that of engine oil, but you must do it while the vehicle is running and either in park or neutral. The dipstick should be a translucent amber or red.

Winter Vehicle Maintenance You Should Know About

Keeping your car in good shape during the long, cold winter is easier than you might think. Following a few vehicle maintenance tips in Hartford, WI will help your car function properly, despite the sub-freezing temperatures, and will extend its overall lifespan. Most importantly, you’ll be less likely to get into an accident or find yourself stranded with a dead battery. Here are five tips to keep your vehicle running during the wintertime.

          Get the right tires

Depending on how much snow you drive through each winter, you may want to invest in a set of winter tires. Winter tires are designed with special treads and rubber compounds to grip the road, even when it’s slick with ice or covered in snow.

If you only drive in the snow occasionally, your all-weather tires may be sufficient. However, it’s smart to keep a pair of chains in the trunk in the event that you get stuck in an unexpected Wisconsin snowstorm.

Finally, make sure you check your tires’ air pressure every few weeks. When it’s cold, the pressure can drop. That makes your vehicle more prone to accidents or blowouts.

          Check your oil

Cold weather affects your oil’s viscosity, rendering it much thicker than in the spring, summer and fall. Your owner’s manual should include the manufacturer’s recommendation. If you can’t find it, use a motor oil with a “W” in the viscosity rating—that means that it’s meant for cold weather use.

While you’re changing the oil, check the radiator and heater hoses for cracks, leaks and brittleness. The rubber should be pliant, but cold weather can make it stiff and brittle, which means it’s more likely to be damaged.

Keep an eye on your battery

Have you ever had trouble starting your car when it’s cold outside? That’s because your battery power drops in cold temperatures. Get your battery checked every so often at an auto shop, service station or parts store. If your battery is older than five years, you may need to replace it entirely. In other cases, you might just need to top off the fluids.

Try to store your car in a garage whenever possible. You might consider improving the insulation in your garage, while you’re at it, as this will help protect against many winter-related vehicle issues.

          Replace your wiper blades

Your wiper blades are made of rubber, which means, like radiator and heater hoses, they can also get brittle and hard in cold temperatures. Replace your wiper blades at the start of the season (in fact, every six months is a good rule of thumb).

Keep your windows clear

Finally, make sure you scrape all the ice and snow off your windows before starting out on a drive. Sit in your car and run the defroster for as long as it takes to clear your view. You may need to take your car in for heater and defroster maintenance.

Winter Oil Change Tips

Getting your car ready for winter is an important part of living in a cold climate. That extends to your engine oil, which is the lifeblood of your vehicle. The colder the ambient temperature, the thicker your oil gets. This can cause problems for your engine, so it’s important to change the oil regularly and get the right type of oil for your climate and vehicle. Here’s what you need to know before your next winter oil change in Hartford, WI.

          Invest in good quality oil

You should already be changing your oil according to your manufacturer’s recommendations. (If not, you risk seriously damaging the engine. That’s not only costly, but it might be so expensive that it’s not worth repairing.) Get the best quality oil you can, but especially during the winter. Even if you plan to store your car during the snowy months, you need to change the oil before letting it sit for months at a time.

When you change the oil, make sure that you let the engine run a few minutes so the new oil is circulated throughout the engine. Then you can safely store it (or drive it) without fear of engine damage.
Oil viscosity matters

You might already know that cold weather affects your oil viscosity. The thicker the oil is, the harder it is for it to lubricate the engine parts and reduce friction and heat. In the past, it was important to change the oil viscosity to prepare for summer and winter—if the oil is too thin, it won’t adhere to the parts and lubricate them properly.

Modern vehicles and oil formulations often make it unnecessary for you to change oil types throughout the year, but you’ll still need to pick the right oil for your specific engine, and change it according to manufacturer’s recommendations. Check your owner’s manual to find out what kind of oil you should use and how often you need to change it. Don’t skimp on this step. The older your oil is, the more it picks up contaminants like dirt, dust and debris. These abrasives will prevent the oil from doing its job and damage the engine components.

Tips for DIY winter oil changes

If you plan to do your own oil change this winter, there are a few things you can do to make sure it goes smoothly. First, run the engine for a few minutes before changing the oil, so it warms up, thins out and drains faster.

Consider storing your tools (such as the wrench you’ll use to loosen the drain plug) in a warm spot. Cold tools are difficult to handle. Using the right size wrench is important, too, since improperly sized wrenches will strip the head.

Finally, remember that when you’re in doubt, there’s no harm in taking your car to the experts. Pat Doll Automotive LLC is happy to perform winter oil changes in Hartford, WI—we’ll make sure you have the right oil to keep your engine running smoothly. Call us today to get started.

COVID-19 and Car Maintenance: What You Should Know

It’s been a long year or so for all of us in Hartford, WI, and while there’s finally a light at the end of the tunnel with the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to the hasty distribution of vaccines, many people are still hunkered down for the foreseeable future. This means people are still driving significantly less than they would in “normal” times. And chances are, the last year has seen you put the fewest miles on your vehicle that you have in a long time.

If your car has been spending a whole lot of time sitting in the garage or parking lot over the last year, it’s important to make sure it’s still getting some activity. Just because your car has been sitting around and not getting used doesn’t mean it’s not aging or experiencing any form of wear and tear, and you shouldn’t just assume your vehicle is going to be good to go when you try to start it up after a long time without using it.

Here are a few steps you can take to keep your vehicle maintained during the rest of the pandemic:

           Find reasons to drive:

Even if you’re working from home and trying to avoid going out to stores or other public locations, you should still set aside some time at least once a week for at least 20 minutes to drive your car, just to keep it exercised. Otherwise, your battery could slowly lose its charge, resulting in your needing to get a jump or otherwise charge your battery. There are other vehicle components that can also wear out if you don’t use them.

           Check your tires:

When the tires don’t get used for an extended amount of time, they’re more likely to lose air pressure faster. Check the inflation to make sure they’re measuring at the proper pressure level. If they get deflated, the tires could get deformed due to sitting in the same place for an extended period of time, and flat spots can ruin a tire.

           Clean your interior:

Your car can develop a stale smell if it just sits there for a long time without being used. This is because any wrappers, food, drinks or wipes that were left in the vehicle will start to decay. You should clean out the garbage and vacuum the carpets and upholstery.

           Look for pests:

Letting your vehicle sit for an extended period of time could also result in pests finding a way to infest your vehicles. Rodents often try to nest under the hood or inside the vehicle, and might even chew away at wires or belts. There’s also the possibility your vehicle could become attractive to spiders or cockroaches if left alone and in the darkness for long enough. Regularly driving it and keeping it clean can help you avoid issues with pests.
